take a trip

by Richard Atwood

For more information about the FWB Home Missions Department (now North American Ministries), please visit www.FWBNAM.com.

IN 2005, GROUPS FROM MORE THAN 40 CHURCHES visited Free Will Baptist Home Mission churches for short-term mission trips. Almost 200 adults and over 300 teens participated. Some churches had two or three groups, while others had none. It would be great to see each of our home mission churches have at least one church group to visit them in 2006. Remember that the main reason to be there is to help the church planter and the new church.

Things Your Group Can Do

  • Saturate an area with door hangers; give invitations door to door.

  • Help with new construction or renovation of a building.

  • Do yard work such as planting, weeding, or cleaning up.

  • Minister in the worship service with singing, preaching, or drama.

  • Perform acts of kindness evangelism such as a free car wash or giving out bottles of water.

  • Have times of special prayer or do a prayer-walk through a particular area.

  • Work with children in a Vacation Bible School (even a 1 day VBS), carnival, Children’s Church, puppet shows, Sunday School, etc.

  • Work with teens for a special service or rally.

  • Help with building maintenance by painting, repair, or cleaning.

  • Plan a day for fun.

How to Really Be a Blessing to the Home Missionary

  • Contact the home missionary well in advance.

  • Coordinate with the home missionary the activities that will benefit the church.

  • Take care of your own housing and food.

  • Bring an offering to give to the church.

  • Take the missionary family out to eat and pay their way for sightseeing.

  • Have the attitude of a servant.

  • Keep on supporting the new church with money, prayer, and your friendship.

Steps to Take Now

  1. Pray and Plan on where to go and what your group can do.

  2. Contact the home missionary.

  3. Set a date.

  4. Get a free notebook on Short Term Mission Trips from our office.

One missionary said, “These trips are good because we are able to do far more with their help than we could ever do on our own.”

Richard Atwood currently serves as director of missionary assistance for the Home Missions Department. He and wife Sandy faithfully minister at Cofer’s Chapel FWB Church in Nashville and throughout the denomination.
